Athens As a Democracy

A democracy is a "political government either carried out directly by the people (direct democracy) or by means of elected representatives of the people (Representative democracy)." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy ) Athens was one of the first known democracies. The Athenian democracy was developed in 500 BC. Athens was "powerful, stable, and well-documented." Athens was remarkably direct rather than being representative. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athenian_democracy) All Athenians voted on every law or policy. Athens was not always stable because of this type of decision-making, but it was definitely a democracy. (http://languages.siuc.edu/classics/Johnson/HTML/L10.html )
