Politics and Religion in Greek Theatre

Ancient Greek theatre began with festivals honoring their gods. Plays were presented at the City Dionysia festival. Men performed songs at this festival to honor the god Dionysia. Tragedy plays evolved from dithyrambs, which are songs that are sung in praise of Dionysus at the Dionysia each year. Tragedy was devised by a leader named Thespas. (http://www.ancientgreece.com/s/Theatre/) Oedipus was a distinguished servant who assumed many high-profile roles within political circles . His most famous play touched upon many themes

such as faith. (http://www.scribd.com/doc/20902/A-Brief-Account-of-Greek-Theatre)
